Blogging Assignment # 2

The song I chose is Childish Gambino’s This is America this song talks about the gun violence situation that is happening currently in America which could be seen in the Hate U give in which Khalil and Natasha both die at the hands of a gun. Not only that but it speaks on the high mass shootings happening , as well as social issues that can be correlated to the historically systematic discrimination and racism that has happened in our history , The music video alone is a powerful statement to everything that has occurred over the years in America.

Here are the lyrics to the song ,

Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah
Yeah, yeah, yeah, go, go away
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah
Yeah, yeah, yeah, go, go away
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah
Yeah, yeah, yeah, go, go away
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah
Yeah, yeah, yeah, go, go away

    Hi Lesly,
This is a fascinating song/ video to put in conversation with The Hate U Give, and in particular the centrality of gun violence in the novel; your post does a good job of bringing out that connection. Well done. CH

This song I feel meets every inch of Challenger deep because it talks and brings awareness on mental illness and suicide. Logic in an interview he did said “In my mind, I was like, ‘Man I wasn’t even trying to save nobody’s life.’ And then it hit me, the power that I have as an artist with a voice,” artists have such power to influence and sometimes they do. Mental health is a serious issue and not getting help can cost you your life. I chose this song not only because of the awareness but because of the hope it gives us in the end. Trench decides to fight because he wants a better life although the illness will still be with him all his life.

    LYRICS

    VERSE 2
    [Alessia Cara]
    It’s the very first breath
    When your head’s been drowning

    Underwater
And it’s the lightness in the air
    When you’re there
Chest to chest with a lover
It’s holding on, though the road’s long
And seeing light in the darkest things
And when you stare at your reflection
    Finally knowing who it is
I know that you’ll thank God you did

    VERSE 3
    [Logic]
I know where you been, where you are, where you goin’
I know you’re the reason I believe in life
What’s the day without a little night?
I’m just tryna shed a little light
    It can be hard
    It can be so hard
But you gotta live right now
You got everything to give right now

    PRE-CHORUS
    I’ve been on the low
    I been taking my time
I feel like I’m out of my mind
It feel like my life ain’t mine
    Who can relate?
    I’ve been on the low
    I been taking my time
I feel like I’m out of my mind
It feel like my life ain’t mine

    CHORUS
    I finally wanna be alive
    I finally wanna be alive
    I don’t wanna die today
    I don’t wanna die
    I finally wanna be alive
    I finally wanna be alive
    I don’t wanna die
    I don’t wanna die

    OUTRO
    [Khalid]
Pain don’t hurt the same, I know
The lane I travel feels alone
But I’m moving ’til my legs give out
And I see my tears melt in the snow
    But I don’t wanna cry
    I don’t wanna cry anymore
    I wanna feel alive
I don’t even wanna die anymore
    Oh I don’t wanna
    I don’t wanna
I don’t even wanna die anymore
